What Happened?
Shares of biotech company Biogen (NASDAQ:BIIB) jumped 3.5% in the pre-market session after JPMorgan upgraded the stock to Overweight from Neutral with a $300 price target, raised from $210.
JPMorgan analyst Chris Schott lifted his target to a Street-high $300, representing roughly 33% upside from the prior close, in research covered by CNBC and StreetInsider. Schott highlighted an increasingly compelling catalyst path heading into 2027 as Biogen evolves beyond its Alzheimer’s drug Leqembi. In comments carried by TipRanks, the bank pointed to Phase 3 data for felzartamab in kidney transplant rejection—a potential market exceeding $2 billion—and litifilimab in cutaneous lupus erythematosus, a condition lacking approved treatments, alongside readthroughs from Eli Lilly’s TRAILBLAZER-ALZ-3 study.
As detailed by Investing.com, Schott observed in a note to clients that with shares valued at approximately 14 times projected 2027 earnings per share, pipeline derisking over the coming year should accelerate earnings growth into low double digits by 2030 and support multiple expansion.
After the initial pop, the shares cooled down to $231.37, up 2.5% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us
Biogen’s shares are not very volatile and have only had 7 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful, although it might not be something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.
The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 4 months ago when the stock gained 5.6% on the news that investors continued to cheer a string of growth signals, including the $1 billion purchase of RayThera Inc., an FDA Breakthrough Therapy tag for its drug candidate Salanersen, and a recent analyst upgrade.
The acquisition of RayThera is set to bolster Biogen's immunology pipeline. The positive sentiment was further supported by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's 'Breakthrough Therapy' designation for Salanersen, a treatment for spinal muscular atrophy.
This news, combined with a recent upgrade to 'Buy' from investment firm Needham and a strong first-quarter earnings beat, reinforced investor confidence. Additionally, Biogen is integrating its multi-billion dollar purchase of Apellis by halting some research programs to focus on its key marketed drugs, Empaveli and Syfovre, demonstrating a clear strategy to prioritize high-value assets.
Biogen is up 30.2% since the beginning of the year, and at $231.37 per share, it has set a new 52-week high. Despite the year-to-date gain, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Biogen’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $812.70.
