Led by a strong opening from AVATAR: FIRE & ASH, the domestic industry box office showed significant depth, with five different movie titles reported to have generated at least $14 million each over the weekend
In the U.S., moviegoers sought out AVATAR: FIRE & ASH in 3D, with approximately 67% of AMC admissions revenue coming from IMAX 3D, Dolby Cinema 3D, and RealD 3D screenings
AMC Entertainment (NYSE: AMC), the largest theatrical exhibitor in the United States and the world, today announced a strong opening-weekend performance for AVATAR: FIRE & ASH at AMC’s U.S. theatres and internationally at ODEON Cinemas. Combined with solid performances from several other new releases and holdover films, AMC enjoyed its best pre-Christmas holiday weekend since 2021, based on attendance and admissions revenue.
In total, more than 4 million moviegoers watched a film at AMC Theatres and ODEON Cinemas from Thursday, December 18, through Sunday, December 21.
Attendance was driven primarily by AVATAR: FIRE & ASH, which opened to a reported $88 million domestically and $345 million globally this past weekend. At AMC’s U.S. theatres, 3D was the most popular way to experience the third installment of this blockbuster franchise. Approximately 2/3rds of AMC U.S. admissions revenue for AVATAR: FIRE & ASH came from IMAX 3D, Dolby Cinema 3D, and RealD 3D showtimes.
Also impressive was the balance across the box office. For the first time in 2025, it is estimated that five films earned at least $14 million each at the domestic box office in a single weekend. As of Sunday, new releases DAVID, THE HOUSEMAID, and THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SEARCH FOR SQUAREPANTS, along with holdover ZOOTOPIA 2, were all estimated to reach that milestone.
AMC Chairman and CEO Adam Aron commented:
“James Cameron, his cast and crew, and the incredible team at Disney have done it yet again. AVATAR: FIRE & ASH is a true cinematic masterpiece that must be seen on the big screen. This is a wonderful gift to movie theatres and moviegoers during the holiday season.
“Additionally, that five different movie titles are currently scoring big at the box office is a strong demonstration that there is something for everyone at AMC Theatres and ODEON Cinemas this holiday season. With AMC’s vast array of premium screens, along with great value offerings such as the AMC Popcorn Pass and AMC's "50% Off" tickets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, this is a great opportunity for movie lovers, friends, and families to come together and enjoy the big-screen experience at AMC.”
